There
is in Brazil a joke about fishermen. People say that fishermen tend
to exaggerate when discussing their catches, that they not only
say they caught more but also bigger fish . But what Brazilians
don¹t believe is when a fisherman says that he caught nothing...
that they consider to be really impossible.
This is because everyone there knows that Brazil has rivers that
are full of the greatest variety of fish in the world. The Amazon,
the Pantanal, the Araguaia, São Francisco and Paraná
rivers are just a few of the fishing routes considered unmissable
by those in the know. As well as these there are around 8,000 kilometres
of coastline, estuaries and deltas, mighty rivers banked by tropical
rain forests, rapids, lakes, beaches, swamps, promontories and countless
options on the open sea (open sea fishing is concentrated in the
states of Bahia and Espírito Santo).

The best
time of year for open sea fishing is between September and
the end of the year, when the blue sea¹s current, coming
from warmer waters, gets closer to the Brazilian coast. The
main species of fish to be caught are blue and white marlins,
swordfish, tuna fish, dourado, barracuda and mackerel. From
the beach its possible to catch among others, betara, catfish,
puffer fish, dogfish, corvina, anchovy, pampos, parati and
xaréu.
