Pipa & Tibau do Sul

Click for Natal, Brazil Forecast

The region is sunny all year round, but Summer (December to March) is the best time of year to visit the beaches.

Location

80 km from Natal, on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte.

Pipa

Home to dolphins & turtles, the village of Pipa is part of the district of Tibau do Sul, an Indian name meaning “between 2 waters” (it having the Guarairas lagoon to one side and the Atlantic Ocean to the other).

From “Orotapiry” – “white man’s village” in Tupi (an Indian tribal language) to “Itacoatiara” – “big yellow rock” and “Green Cape Point” due to the wonderful view of native Atlantic Forest seen by sailors from a distance, the village finally became known as Pipa because the pedra do moleque (which can be seen at the furthermost point of Shipwreck beach (or praia dos Afogados) seemed, at a distance, to look like a barrel of wine or spirits. Maybe it’s from here that her ability to enrapture adventurers and tourists from the world over comes since the time when pirates of every nationality landed on her shores in search of the famous Brazil wood (pau brasil).

And enrapture it does! Even on arriving, from the road you are bewitched by beaches with clear, warm waters, immense coconut palms plantations, natural pools and viewpoints, impressive cliffs, some still covered by Atlantic Forest, white sand dunes, coves and precipices. Situated in the biggest ecological sanctuary in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, chosen by “Guia 4 Rodas” (the most respected travel book in Brazil) as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil, Pipa became famous in the 80’s thanks to the surfers who discovered its delights.

Our Hotel Recommendation:

Pousada Dos Girassois

Hotel Pousada Dos Girassois Pipa

Chapadão - The Chapadão was given this name after a report in the most famous weekly program in Brazil, Fantástico, which presented theories that intergalactic ships had landed there because of the altitude and open areas it provides. The Chapadão has a charming view of the ocean, and its height, breeze, the sea and absolutely everything else leaving the tourist gaping at this Pipa postcard.

But it’s not just ideal for surfers; here on offer are boat and canoe rides, buggy and horse rides, walks and motor cross along trails through the Atlantic forest. In fact here lies one of Pipa’s attractions; it is somehow able to blend its breathtaking scenery and opportunity for adventure with charming and comfortable facilities; hotels and guesthouses, bars and shops and restaurants with a truly international flavour.

Ecological sanctuary - The largest reservation of the Atlantic Forest in this region, it has trails, viewing points and museums. Tourists can trek accompanied by a guide. Several hotels and motels provide this service.

Nightlife

At night tourists can encounter many small bars for all tastes, from the calmer to the more energetic, with pop, rock, reggae and many other rhythms, as well as restaurants offering delicious international and local cuisine. A walk down Dolphin Bay Avenue will expose you to many languages, and then you realize how many foreigners are here. Apart from the many beautiful people, which means there is all-night flirting.

Pipa is an attraction in itself. Cosmopolitan and exciting, the lively Pipa folk need energy to last them till dawn. What’s more, here young people from all over the world gather and give themselves up to everything from the rhythms of the regional “forro” (from the English “for all”) to the beat of techno.

Without doubt it was this energy that led the Brazilian magazine “Viaje Mais” to declare Pipa nightlife “the hottest you’ll find outside Recife”. But it’s more than being in one of the most popular of Northeastern holiday spots; Pipa guarantees “unforgettable days of leisure and entertainment or simply rest and peace and quiet amongst its exuberant natural beauty under the blessing of Saint Sebastian, its patron saint.

Beaches

Pipa beach

In the region of Tibau do Sul. Arts and crafts highlight the hand embroidery, labyrinths, laces and nets and fishing nets.

In Tibau do Sul there is the Pipa Beach, a home to dolphins and marine turtles. Its name is indigenous for "between two waters" (as it is surrounded by the Lake of Guaraíras and the Atlantic Ocean).

"Orotapiry" - village of the white man in tupi, "Itacoatiara" - main, yellow-color stone and "Ponta do Cabo Verde" - from the beautiful view of the Atlantic Forest that sailors saw from afar. The village ended up being called Pipa, because the Moleque Stone (at the end of the Drowning Beach)looks like a barrel of wine or rum, from a distance. Maybe this is the source of its ability to make adventurers and tourists the world over "dizzy" since the time when pirates of all nationalities disembarked on its beaches in search of Brazil wood.

Pipa Beach - Warm, clear water, immense coconut trees, natural pools and viewing points, imposing cliffs still covered by the Atlantic Forest, white dunes, bays, vertical slopes. Located in the largest ecological sanctuary in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, it was chosen by the Quatro Rodas Guide as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Pipa became famous in the 80s among surfers. You can do anything: boat trips, buggies, kayaking or horse riding, walks and rallying along the Atlantic Forest trails.

Beach of Love (Praia Do Amor) - The name comes from the heart shape and the fact that foreigners used to practice nudism here. The Beach of Love is also good for surfers, because of the quite considerable waves.

Dolphin Bay (Baía dos Golfinhos ) - Located at the Madeiro Beach. Next to the road there is an incredible view of the bay. Dolphins also appear here to feed and play, and you can even swim with them every day, more usually in the mornings.

Tibau do Sul
Tibau do Sul still keeps the tranquil way of life of a fishermen’s village. It is just 80 km from Natal, capital of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The best time of the year to enjoy its beaches is in the summer, between December and March. For those wishing to visit it in another period, however, you can plan your tour without worries as the sun shines there all year round.
Among the natural beauties of Tibau are the crags and dolphins, which come to the coast to show off and play with tourists.

All beaches of the city are accessed by improvised stairways on the crags themselves. The local hotels also stay on ecological formation, creating a nice environment, and a beautiful sea view. Excellent option for those wishing for peace during the day, without loosing the landscape, and the night events of Pipa beach, its neighbor.

In Tibau do Sul, handicraft gains highlight for its rich embroidery, labyrinths, and the confection of casting nets, and fishing nets.
