Arraial D'Ajuda

Click for Salvador Airport, Brazil Forecast

Arraial D’Ajuda lies on one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in southern Bahia. This tropical paradise was first discovered by hippies in the early 70s, a post-Woodstock generation that traveled the world and found in Arraial an alternative way of life with new values. These same people are now the owners of the friendly, rustic inns that are so common in town, many of which were built as extensions of their own homes.

The streets of the town are unpaved, and lined with small, rustic inns and charming restaurants, that blend perfectly with the town’s carefree ambience. It’s as easy to find a Japanese sushi as it is to taste one of Bahia’s famous seafood stews known as moquecas. A pedestrian district known as “Broadway” is a must in Arraial with its many bars and restaurants where tables are set up right on the sidewalk. The variety of foods available is almost as great as the variety of music.

From high a top the cliff on which Arraial is located, there is a panoramic view of the Discovery Coast, and the town’s unique charm brings together people from all over the world, especially the international jet set, who have adopted Arraial as a home away from home.

The daily routine in Arraial is completely out of the ordinary. The shops only open in the end of the afternoon and close at about midnight. People dress very informally and it’s considered completely normal to go shopping in a bikini or even to go to a nightclub wearing shorts. And just when you think the town is settling down for the night, the party is just beginning with luaus on the beach and dancing until the early hours of the morning.

What To Do

Arraial Dajuda

Trekking
Walking to Trancoso, along 17 km of beaches (some crowded, some deserted), with coral pools, open sea, and an estuary, where people can swim in fresh waters is a very nice option .
There are nudism areas in some stretches of deserted beach.

Pitinga Beach
It is one of the most beautiful beaches near Arraial. It is 1.5 kilometers far from the city center and can be reached through a very nice little road inside the Forest. Automobiles may go only until Maré Bar and Restaurant, which has very comfortable facilities. From there on you can only reach the beaches on foot. For those who are guests in Brisas and Vila do Beco Inns, Maré restaurant offers parking facilities. Their specialties are fish baked on a tile and baked lobster.

The owner of Pousada Erva Doce organizes diving activities and provides boats and equipment, for friends and guests. According to him, the ideal season for diving is between December and March, when the water is clearer. Along the coast, the reefs offer special conditions for all kinds of divers. The “reboleiras” (undersea mountains) of Taípe, Ajuda and Itapororoca, in Trancoso, are wonderful sceneries. For undersea fishing, the best places are the reefs of Fora, Pedra Rica, and Parcel do Itacipucu and the estuaries of rivers Buranhém, Frades and Caraíva.

Chapel of Our Lady of Ajuda
The Jesuits started building the chapel in 1549. At that time, they discovered a fountain of miraculous waters on the way to the hillock, which attracted pilgrims. It was a belvedere in the beginning and the locals from Santo Amaro, the nearest village, used also to go there for help against attacks of the natives: that is the origin of its name(Our Lady of Help). Many pilgrims visit the place very often, because of the miracles. The celebration of Our Lady of Ajuda, on August 15th, has been a tradition for centuries.

Broadway’s Promenade
At night, tourists should visit “Broadway”, a pedestrian district in Arraial with several bars and restaurants, where tables are set up right on the sidewalk. Tourists find a great variety of food and music styles. There are necklaces and other adornments with seeds handmade by the natives and hippies, artworks made of all kinds of stones and woods, and many more original works of new artists. Actually,Broadway’s Promenade is a place you can’t miss.
