The
food is fine, the beer is cold, and the location magic --
on a pier on the edge of the Amazon, overlooking the riverboats
of the new Hidroviaria do Amazonas. Cuisine is standard Brazilian
churrasco fare -- picanha and other beef cuts, plus chicken
and, thanks to the location, local fish including tambaqui
and piraruçu. The restaurant is on the patio at the
end of the concrete pedestrian overpass.

After
days of eating fish, pasta may come as a welcome change. Manaus's
best (and only) Italian spot offers pizzas, lasagnas, and
stuffed pastas such as ravioli. On Sundays there's a huge
buffet.

| One
of the best ways to try many of the exotic fruits of the Amazon
is in the form of ice cream. Some suggested flavors are cupuaçu,
açai, jaca, bacaba, or graviola. Grab a couple of flavors
and taste away. There is another shop in Ponta Negra (tel. 092/658-3980).

A
lunch place downtown. The selection is quite varied; international
dishes include pasta, Stroganoff, and great salads. The buffet
also gives you the opportunity to try various local fish dishes,
stews (caldeirada), and beans. Codfish lovers (I know you're
out there) will love the Friday lunch menu.

Porto de Ceasa

| A
lovely small restaurant overlooking the Porto Ceasa, Moronguêtá
serves fresh local Amazon fish in a astonishing variety
of ways. There are seven fish species on the menu, all
firm and flavorful. The best include tambaqui, tucanaré;,
dourado, matrichã;, piranha, and camarão.
These can all be prepared in Bahian moquecas or stewlike
calderadas, served grilled with banana, cooked with coconut
milk, and fried on a hot grill with spicy peppers. Fish
are also served ao tucupi -- in manioc oil -- or basted
in cupuaçu juice. There's also cold Brazilian beer
and excellent local fruit juices. |
